SUNDAY, 14 JUNE 09 -- NICE TWO BRIDGE KISS IN MODERATE WINDS AND BRILLIANT SUNSHINE

Pat and Pat Jr. joined us for the second time and we headed out a little after 3 pm for our afternoon sail. Cruise ships were gone from pier 35, so we raised single reefed main just outside the marina exit and pulled out a reefed jib and headed out into the bay.

As we sailed westward, a lovely ketch named ANTARA was heading east, sailing downwind and looking good!

We began beating westward against both wind and flood current, while the city was basking in brilliant sunshine and clear air.

Behind us this Valiant sailboat was also heading westward with full canvas flying, though her jib was a small one.

Behind us, this small Catalina was heading toward the shore of the city...

... and PRIVATEER was headed out on a charter sail with quite a few passengers....

... and neighbor boat, the BECKY J, was heading toward her home port.

We also spotted a small Ericson sailboat crossing the bay behind us.

A lovely sailboat named ZEST was sailing eastward and looking good with full canvas flying. So we did spot these sailboats on the bay, but given the nice conditions, there were really very few boats out there.

As we sailed toward Richardson Bay with the breeze shifting more into the west, this nice sailboat was heading across the bay with heavily reefed main.

This lovely small sailboat was heading toward the gate on the westerly wind and looking good.

Her two person crew was enjoying the brilliant sunshine and the sparkling bay water.

We eventually tacked toward the gate, and the lovely schooner named SEAWARD passed us, heading toward Raccoon Straits.

The GGB was standing sentinel over the gate and several sailboat were out there near the gate or on the ocean as we headed south toward the gate.

This nice sailboat was heading up the shore of the headlands toward Sausalito.

A few sailboarders were out playing on the bay, like this one.

We sailed all the way across the bay, being pushed away by the current, while this sailboat headed for the gate....

... and ROUND UP looked good with nicely trimmed sails having just a slight bit of twist in them.

We sailed to near Blackaller Buoy and then tacked toward the gate, and watched as this sailboarder blasted past us.

Pat Jr. was at the helm as we sailed out the gate on port tack close reach, shooting the gate between midspan and the north tower.

Father and son were enjoying their first time of shooting the gate in a sailboat.

Our beautiful bridge and the spectacular Marin Headlands were enjoying the brilliant afternoon shine.

We just sailed out a short ways and then, with Pat at the helm, we came about and headed back inside the bay.

We were joined in returning to the bay by this catamaran.

This lovely Islander passed astern of us, heading for the gate.

A kiteboarder blasted across the bay in front of us as we headed eastward, now with full jib pulled out for more power.

Alcatraz and this sailboat passing her southern shore were enjoying the late afternoon sunshine and moderate winds.

The sailboat was flying full canvas and looking good. We owed her right of way, but were able to pass well in front of her.

The city was basking in the late afternoon sunshine as we approached home port.

A lovely sailboat was heading west....

...with her crew enjoying the nice breeze and sunny weather.

The flags on the end of pier 39 were fluttering in the breeze of about 10 knots.

We decided to continue on toward the Bay Bridge to complete a two bridge kiss as this small sailboat motorsailed westward, towing something-- perhaps a kayak.

The financial district buildings were well illuminated by the evening sunshine.

The Rocket Boat blasted past us as we sailed toward the A-B span of the bridge.

As we approached the Ferry Building, the clock on the tower was showing about 6:08 pm and we were being blasted by strong wind gusts from time to time.

The Bay Bridge was enjoying the evening sunshine as we approached the A-B span.

We ducked under the A-B span and then fell off to reef the jib to prepare for the return trip toward home port. As we headed back north, this Ericson sailboat was heading toward the Bay Bridge--- gosh we're seeing a lot more Ericsons out there lately.

This nice sailboat flying jib only was sailing just behind us as we sailed to the northwest on the westerly wind. She eventually passed us to port and we eventually tacked toward the lee of pier 35 to douse sails and prepare for landing. We then motored around the pier and into the marina, landing fine in the light ebb current then flowing. Our outing was a great pleasure and the crew company was good, so we were all feeling good!

Later that evening, I went out to the end of the pier to watch the sunset.

The largest flock of pelicans that I've seen so far this year flew past, these two leading the flock.

The flags were fluttering in a breeze of 8-10 knots and I almost wished I were still out there on the bay, flying full canvas in the moderate breeze.
