SATURDAY, 21 FEBRUARY 09 -- SAIL TO TREASURE ISLAND-- MOTORING BACK HOME

Thanks to sfsailing.com, Rosemary and Michelle and their two children, Bailey and Cameron joined us at 2pm for our afternoon outing. They have recently moved to California from New Jersey and now live in Oakland.

We raised full main just outside the marina exit, put out full jib and headed out into the central bay, sailing to the northeast and soon spotting the HAWAIAN CHIEFTAIN motoring northalong the shore of Yerba Buena.

The city was grayed out by the overcast skies and the light was not great for photography.

A Catalina flying a cruising spinnaker was heading for the Bay Bridge as we continued toward Treasure Island.

A short time later, we spotted this sailboat sailing northward along the shore of Treasure Island.

Off in the northwest, this nice looking sailboat was sailing towerd the city on a southwesterly course.

I had hoped to see the Chieftain putting out canvas but they just kept motoring to the west. We looked around for the LADY WASHINGTON but she was nowhere to be seen. Usually they are together.

Off in the west, this Beneteau was looking good as she sailed northeastward on port tack and flying a colorful cruising spinnaker.

Way off in the north, east of Angel Island, a sailboat race was happening.

A bit later, that Beneteau had gybed and was now heading toward the Bay Bridge on starboard tack broad reach.

This Hunter sailboat was also heading for the Bay Bridge on broad reach starboard tack.. You can barely make out the Golden Gate Bridge in the haze in the background.

Along the shore of Angel Island, this small sailboat was heading northeast and flying a colorful kite.

Ahead of us, this nice ketch was sailing southwest on starboard tack close reach....

... but the skipper soon tacked to the west. His boat is all outfitted for blue water cruising with a life raft, etc.

We gybed and headed for the east side of Treasure Island, passing this nice dingy heading north.

Cameron and Bailey were enjoying the calm conditions as we ghosted along.

The SF Poliice fast boat blasted past us to starboard....

....and this kayaker paddled past us at a much slower speed.

The little bit of breeze died away so we came about and headed back to the north, passing again that dingy that had turned around also.

Soon we were being passed by several sailboats motoring and dousing sail, like this one....

... and this smaller one...

... and this race boat.

We soon had to start motoring and despite our pleadings with Mother Nature, the bay turned into a flat water lake and we were stuck with motoring all the way back to home port. The crew had enjoyed the outing-- their first time out on the bay!
