SUNDAY, 1 FEBRUARY 09 -- NICE SAIL TO THE GATE AND BACK

Michael joined us for an afternoon sail abour 3 pm and we headed out for an afternoon sail-- first time in over a month that we've sailed together.

Chris and Charlotte were sailing around in the marina in a Laser 2 as we headed toward the marina exit.

We pulled up the full main, pulled out full jib and headed out into the cental bay, joining some other sailboats already out there, like this lovely Catalina.

As we headed west against a light flood current, this sailboat was heading east, sailing downwind on broad reach.

Off in the north, this sailboat was heading toward the Bay Bridge.

Way off in the west, this ketch was also sailing westward.

We sailed toward Alcatraz and approached the east shore before tacking back to the south as this sailboat was heading westward.

We sailed southward for a short time before tacking back to the west again, sailing past the south shore of Alcatraz which was drenched in sunshine.

A nice Catalina was sailing past Alcatraz and passing us to starboard....

.... looking good with crew enjoying the warm sunshine.

We sailed close enough to the south shore of the island to see some of the internal structure of that building with windows removed, the interior columns that line up with the edges of the missing windows.

Way ahead of us a couple of sailboats were sailing toward Sausalito.

Mt. Tam was enjoying clear skies and sunshine, and a number of sailboats were playing around near Richardson Bay.

A sailing outing on the bay would not be complete without that airship passing overhead on her way to the gate.

Off in the north, this trimaran was heading east.

A sailboat named Cali was crossing the bay toward Sausalito.

The city was enjoying the late afternoon sunshine, and sailboats were starting to disappear from the bay, probably heading home to watch the super bowl.

We sailed to near the shore of the headlands and then tacked to sail across the gate, sailing to a point about inside the south tower before tacking toward the gate.

We just ducked out the gate, and then came about and headed back inside, watching as that tourist helicopter ducked under the bridge ....

... and then flew past the rugged cliffs of the Marin Headlands before climbing and flying back over the gate.

Behind us, a lovely sailboat was heading back toward the bay and looing really good, as undoubtedly were we!

As we headed for home port in a softer wind with some flood current assist, we watched as this lovely sailboat approached from the north and passed behind us on her way toward the gate.

Ahead of us, a small catamaran was crossing the bay and passed in front of us.

Off to starboard a quarter mile or so, a catboar was sailing downwind on a parallel course, making faster headway than we were. I was wishing for a spinnaker to give us more headway in the soft wind of around 5 knots or so.

Michael needed to get home to prepare for an evening date, so we started motoring, dousing sail and preparing for landing after passing Aquatic Park.
